Avoid the No-experience Trap

How many times have you applied for a job and heard, "Sorry, but you don't have the experience"? You feel like you're caught on a vicious cycle - you can't get a job because you don't have the experience, and you can't get any experience because you don't have a job. Here are some ways to avoid the no-experience trap.

1. Try co-op education - it gives you a chance to work during the school year at a career that interests you. You'll get hands-on experience and make helpful contacts.
2. Spend a day job shadowing with someone working in a field that appeals to you. It'll give you a good idea of what a job is like and what it requires.
3. Find a mentor who can explain his or her job to you and answer any questions you have. Your knowledge of a field or industry could be useful in your job hunt.
4. Be a volunteer and get on-the-job training. You'll also make connections in your community that might lead to paid employment.

If you're interested in any of these activities a guidance or employment counselor can help you get started.
