Interesting Assorted Sites

Schindler's List
Such an extraordinary story at a rather extraordinary site. Graphically, this is a well-done web locale, done in moody black and whites, but you will hardly notice the artwork and graphics as you begin to read the fascinating story of one of the most humane men ever to grace this earth. All the while you are serenaded by the Theme from the Spielberg film Schindler's List by John Williams. I could stop here and that would just about sum up the tale of this site, but there is just so much more depth to experience. Links further the experience with books on Hitler's (I even hate to include that name in the same paragraph as Schindler's) plans to eliminate an entire race. There are also links to other books related to that period of history. A very informative and insightful site, to be sure.

Take One. They're Free!
I tend to be suspicious of signs like that, so if you're anything like me, rest assured that I have paid a visit to this site and done some investigative research for you. There are approximately two dozen categories of freebies at this site. For brevity's sake I selected five to visit. I sent a Digital Postcard to my friend Alfred, for free. I downloaded some cool fonts to share with the guys on our Content Team. I sent a Prank Computer Freebie that will drive my brother Louis crazy. I entered a free contest to win $25 (I didn't win). That one was for me. Last but not least I ordered free samples of dental cleaners for Max, my Mom's puppy. When you know where to look, and I know I say that often, but it is true, you will be amazed at what you can find on the Internet for free. The FreeSite does a great job of directing surfers to a wide variety of freebies. In addition there are links to other free sites and to a Freebie Trader page.

Webmaster, Webmaster, Spin Me A Web
Just about everybody these days is calling themselves a Webmaster. Just because someone owns a car doesn't mean they are qualified to drive it! With that in mind, I highly recommend to those of you who are just getting your own pages up and running, please stop by and check out the incredible amount of info at this site. Meander through the multiple links to sites that will assist you in your endeavor to construct, market and sustain a great Webpage. Check out the reviews of various software and services available to Webmasters that are intelligent and thorough. Ease of use is an important feature at this site. Webmaster-Resources will be so useful to you that you will thank your lucky stars that you took my advice and dropped in on it.

'N SYNCronize!
This 5-boy group from the USA has shown up just about everywhere these days. Their perfect blend of harmonies is eating up the charts all over the world, as well as the heart of the Webmaster of this very well crafted site herself, Nicole. There is a lot of attention to detail here and tons of photos of the guys at various events from awards shows, concerts to MTV's Rock-n-Jock show. You can find out tour dates, get the personal scoop on the guys, buy merchandise or download video and audio clips to your heart's content! There is even a page where you can go and find out if you are truly obsessed with N SYNC. How many of those criteria did you answer yes to Nicole? Now it's your turn surfers!

Shopping Sucks!
As more and more of you out there are beginning to realize, it is relatively simple to purchase many items that you would normally buy in the store, from your home by computer. Personally, I think there are certain items that one needs to be able to touch to buy. My mother would argue that you must buy all items you touch! However, electronic shopping does offer a great way to purchase many of the necessities we need. The Shopping Sucks site offers Web surfers a chance to easily purchase items that they would normally have to brave crowds and disgruntled clerks to get. There are a wide variety of items to choose from, including a section called " As Seen On TV", where you can purchase items like the Mt. Fuji Pillow or the Eurosealer! How cool is that?

Helter Skelter
This has to be one of the most warped and original sites I have yet to come across. It was actually referred to me by Chris from our Content team, whom I thank very much. Talk about a distraction! Distracting is an understatement. What they have done here is taken samples of handwritings from famous killers in history as well as other notable people and created fonts to mimic their handwriting styles. It's really kind of clever. As they aptly put it, "What better way to let your boss know your true feelings than by resigning with the help of Charles Manson?" Jack the Ripper and Lizzie Borden among other murderers are also included. If you're not the murderous type you can choose from Dead Presidents or maybe a famous Cowboy.

How Much is that Doggie in the Window?
Needless to say most of you will not remember that tune from like a million years ago when they invented this thing called a Record Player, but you will nonetheless want to remember this site. The diversity of product and wonderful graphic representations make it a pleasure to shop online for these essential and leisure items for the beloved mongrel in your life. Laid out like a real pet Mega-Store with departments like; bed & bowl, groom & flea, etc… and products like Designer Colognes (CK-9, Timmy Holedigger…), Play-Time gift bags and for that puppy who lives an alternative lifestyle there is always the Puppy Pride Power! Gift Bag, you will have endless choices to satisfy your pet's every need. I was amazed at the wide array of items. I could not think of anything that they didn't have. This site is a hoot! Or should I say a growl?

DeGeneration X Marks the Spot
It's a War in here. Literally. The WarZone Revolution explores the popular electronic game simulating real wrestling matches. This cool site has reader polls to participate in, a Newz Board to catch up on the latest in the world of WarZone, as well as great screen captures of various bouts from the hot selling game. Of course, what unofficial site would be complete without a hints and tips section featuring strategies, great moves and well-kept secrets. The message board and links are way cool and will keep you in touch with all the ideas and other related resources out there on the great World Wide Web.

Like Sands through the Hourglass…
The SoapBox is a daytime soap opera buff's paradise. All of the major soaps are represented, as a matter of fact I could not think of any that were missing. Connecting with all of your fellow fans was never so easy. The viewer polls for each of the soaps are fun. As are the categories of content; applause, complaints and gossip. There are some good links to other soap related sites as well as a book link that offers up a host of great books about or by Soap's greatest stars. Of course, the one question I wanted answered, "Is Susan Lucci ever going to win an Emmy?" is not revealed here, but that's okay, it will just make the awards more interesting each year.

Let's Talk About Sex
The Sexual Health InfoCenter certainly has a lot to say about sex. I was immediately drawn to the Sex Quiz of the Month and feared that I would embarrass myself, so I agreed to be truthful no matter what the turnout. I am happy to say that I am a great guesser and answered 15 out of 20 questions correctly! I didn't have time to participate in the Sex Survey, but there is one you all can participate in. The Guide to Better Sex offers partners inventive ideas on ways to further escalate their sexual pleasure. The site also offers a section on Gay and Lesbian sex with advice on how to get the most out of it. There is also a section on STD's which everyone should read. Although I must admit, it is kind of scary to see that large list of possibly contractible diseases! The site is easy to navigate and contains a lot of important, pertinent information that just about everybody can relate to. After all, Sex is possibly the one thing that we all have in common.

Caverns of Blood
Very intense web browser experiences -- what doesn't this site have? Very cool journey with the purpose being the multimedia experience itself. MSIE 3.0 or Netscape Navigator 3.0 required to experience most of it.

Pepsi World
Awesomely cool site -- lots of graphics, fun, and enhanced web features. (Shockwave helps, and they have a special area for faster-than-28.8 connections!)

Jurassic Park: The Ride
This is just part of the fun you can have at the Universal City web site. Besides learning all about the ride at Universal Studios, you can play an online adventure game. This is a huge Java online game (better have a fast connection and some patience) that plays a lot like other computer adventure games -- complete with audio and video. You can also browse the dinosaur database, and learn a little about human genetics.

Bonus.com - the SuperSite for Kids
Here's a cool place for kids to go and participate in many activities -- games, projects, coloring, exploring, learning, and more. It uses advanced technology and works more like a computer program than a typical web site, with no fear of getting "out" to inappropriate sites.

Internet Television
Watch and listen to dozens of TV and radio stations right on the Internet! RealAudio/RealPlayer needed for most of them.

M&M Studios Bakery
Love those M&Ms! Get baking tips and recipes for M&M baking bits. Yummm! Kids: enter their lab to see how they're made! (Need Shockwave and RealAudio.)

National Geographic
You know the magazine, now check out their excellent web site. All of the great stories and photos, and more. For instance, their Park of the Month, with an interactive maps, facts & figures, travel tips, etc. If you have Shockwave and Quicktime VR, be sure to check out their "Fantastic Forest" (see their "Contents" page).

MTV Online
Should be self-explanatory, right? Major multimedia site, Beavis and Butthead, music, videos...

Gamelan
Great resource for web developers -- Lots of info and links to Java, VRML, ActiveX, etc. resources and example pages. (Not sure if this site itself implements all of the mentioned features, but it has links to plenty that do.)

The NASA Shuttle Web
Wow, live streaming video from the space shuttle! If you can't catch it live, get recordings of video or audio. Even ask the crew a question! Plus all sorts of shuttle information, photos, and even details of how to spot the shuttle from the ground!

The Adventures of Space Dog
This is a pretty neat site for kids. It has activities you can print out (coloring, connect-the-dots, how to draw Space Dog), movies, a Shockwave puzzle, and more. It's a very fast and well-done site.

Hey Boys And Girls
This really is a radical site. There are drawing tips to help all the youngsters out there get started at becoming great artists. Radicalman has also included samples of his very own "whacked out" drawings as a guideline. There are storybooks, mini posters to put on your computer and lots of other neat items to occupy all the net’s boys and girls. The Webmaster was kind enough to inform me that the average age group seems to be between 4 and 8 years old. Although, it appears that many adults enjoy the coloring as well. This could be a great way to introduce your children to computers and the Internet.

Rattle Those Pots And Pans
I am getting hungry just reviewing this one. There is a lot more to this site than just cookies, although you may want to try out Barbara Bush’s Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. I hear it is out of this world. Besides cookies, you can choose from over 30 other pages that each have dozens of other recipes. There is a handy metric conversion chart for those of us that haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet. I can only hope you don’t eat everything you can bake on this site!

You’re Still Alive?
You may not be the type of person that believes in UFO’s or fortune tellers and the like, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a little bit of fun with this site’s life expectancy prediction. It won’t cost you a cent and it is a great conversation piece. It is real interesting to see how your life span changes based on what country you live in. I’ll live to 93 in the USA, but only 21 in Ethiopia! It only takes about one minute to enter the information required to calculate a response. Try yours today.

The ABBA Phenomenon
Quite simply put, this site is fabulous. Being a huge ABBA fan, I was pleasantly surprised to spot this site among the World1000. There is so much information on this Australian site, not to mention links for days, that you will find it hard to close the window. The webmaster’s unique insight adds a lot of charm and sparkle to an already wonderful cornucopia of information and pictures. It is easy to see why these fab 70’s Pop Superstars are still garnering so much attention. There are things about this group that even the most diehard fans will be surprised to find out. Did you know that more than 10 years after the group disbanded ABBA Gold, a Greatest Hits compilation was released and sold over 12 million copies (some estimates are closer to 20 million)! That was an easy one, but it gives you newbies an idea of the level of popularity this group continues to have.

All Dolled Up With No Place To Go!
I dread publishing this one. If my mother signs on, tell her you’re not home! This site offers a nice selection of dolls to choose from, as well as a detailed history of the collections. If you so desire, you may even go on a factory tour to see just how the dolls are created. The webmaster has also included a chat room for collectors to compare notes on their dolls or just shoot the breeze. During this busy holiday season, this makes a great stop for some last minute shopping. These unique dolls are great and wonderfully showcased in this well-done site.

May The Force Still Be With You
The hype is only just beginning and who can doubt that the movie will surpass it. This is a busy site with great links to related sites as well as a series of prequel photos. A chatroom is provided for visitors to exchange ideas and info relating to the series of films. The marketplace provides an opportunity for the serious collector to unearth some otherworldly treasures. On this site there is even a counter, down to the seconds, for how long it is til the opening day of the new Star Wars movie. Out of site!

Ladies and Gentlemen Meet The King Of Farts!
Yes you read that correctly. I had to see this to believe it myself. With over 60,000 sites to choose from, you might wonder why I would select this one. It’s simple. It is unique, which is one of the criteria for the Pick of the Week. The site is pretty straightforward and allows the visitor to download "The Fart of the Day" to playback and listen at their leisure. One section even has comments and ratings on the various farts of the day by surfers that stopped by. You can even submit your own farts if you like! This site is so whacked I had to tell you about it. Believe it or not, it gets a lot of traffic and it is a free site.

Diamonds Are Forever
This might seem a little out there, but it is the holiday shopping season. I wanted to add a little variety to our online stores mentioned this week. Imagine buying jewelry online. Why not? You can purchase just about anything online these days. It seems a bit crazy to this cautious shopper. However, this site beautifully showcases the fine array of jewels available for online purchase. I especially like the "Symphony in White" section. There are some great links on this free site (although you must pay for your purchases). According to the company’s bio this company has been around since 1835, although not on line at that time. Another interesting stop at the cyber mall.

Disasterpiece Theatre
With titles like "Mona of the Apes" (yes, it’s THE Mona!) and "Elephant Crotch" you can get an idea of what is in store for you. This site is a riot, and what’s best is-most of these disasterpieces can be bought for a price. A ridiculous price! The collector claims to have purchased them for between $5-$10 each and some of them have price tags in the tens of thousands on them. I even spotted one for over $3 million!! Each artpiece can be made larger for closer scrutiny, although I advise you to stay a safe distance from the screen, and comes with some really hilarious descriptions and impressions by the collector. For the connessoir of the unusual yet remarkable this site is definitely worth a visit. You’ll crack up.

9021 Oh You’ve Got To Be Kidding!
I shouldn’t be so mean. But it’s so easy. This is a temple to the folks over at the Fox hit Beverly Hills 90210, which is in like its 100 th season or something like that. There are the prerequisite picture, chatroom and gossip sections for the 90210iacs to go nuts over. Good graphics and a fast moving server make the visit technically pleasant and to the diehard fan very rewarding indeed.

One place to find out is the Business Start-Up Q&A, a site that is simply a list of very common and simple questions, with very straightforward answers--just the kind of advice that's difficult to find on the street. In fact, most of the answers are a variation on "look before you leap," which has to be the smartest advice anyone could give a new business owner. Topics covered include buying a franchise, buying an existing business, getting funding or grants, naming your business, and more. Most of the answers are fairly simplistic, but the site provides an excellent "pre-staging area" for someone thinking about going into business for the first time.

Citizens Against UFO Secrecy
"Educating and enlightening the public about the continuing presence of extraterrestrial life and intelligence on this planet." This group is so dedicated to their doctrine that they are currently filing a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the Army over the Roswell incident, which happened over 50 years ago. When you really strip down the CAUS credo it's kind of ironic, wouldn't you say? Because searching for extraterrestrial life forms while searching for signs of intelligence on this planet are two mutually exclusive concepts, right? Anyway, if you like the odd and bizarre or if you are convinced there is a government cover-up afoot, this is the place you want to be on the Web.

Pokey Web
No, this isn't the place to find out more about Gumby's pony pal. It belongs to a very special 12-year-old who is already learning about the harsh realities of Corporate America. There are a group of "suits" (and their lawyers, of course) who don't like the idea that this kid has a Web site with a name - 'Pokey' - that they think belongs to them. This gutsy kid wants to settle the matter in the courts. Personally, we're pulling for the kid. There's an area of his site to get the complete background story. There's also a place where you can post him your message of support and give him some ammunition to use in court.
